CUHK- Chinese University of Hong Kong Summer Research


For the AY 2022-2023, this program will not be offered. The following information is provided as a reference for future years and is subject to change. 

The Chinese University of Hong Kong Summer Undergraduate Research Programme (SURP) provides students with the opportunity to conduct research for 8 weeks in Hong Kong. Students are able to choose from a variety of research topics.


Application requirements:

  • Good academic and behavioral standing
  • Must be studying in your second year or higher at the time of application
  • Minimum 2.75 GPA 
  • Please check partner school for additional requirements

Costs for the program can be found on the CUHK website. Funding for SSOE students through the Swanson School of Engineering may be possible, please watch for research and internship funding information to be sent out to all students via email. Remember that your lifestyle and spending choices can greatly affect the amount of money you'll need while abroad. Visit our Budgeting page for more information. 





Academic Description: 
Students are eligible to earn 3 credits for their research at CUHK upon successful completion of the program. If you are seeking academic credit to transfer to the University of Pittsburgh, please consult with your academic advisor. Keep in mind if you want to get academic credit at Pitt additional tuition cost and fees will apply. You must alert Engineering International Programs prior to departure if you plan to transfer credit.
Application Instructions: 

Students must complete BOTH the Pitt application AND CUHK application by stated deadlines.  In addition to applying to Pitt Global Experiences through this application portal,  and submitting the Pitt application materials, you must also submit an application and additional documents DIRECTLY to the CUHK Summer Undergraduate Research Programme (SURP)   Pitt's application deadline for this program is typically in February.   CUHK-SURP typically has a similar deadline!  Any questions, please contact: Alicia Olalde, SSOE Global Experiences Office.

Hello! Konnichiwa! I am the Director for Global Experiences and Engagement in the Swanson School of Engineering.  After working for the JET program in Japan for just over two years, I decided to pursue a career in international education. I returned to the US via a few months of travel -slowing making my way west with many stops in stunning locations and with amazing people. Whenever possible, I continue  explore new countries and cultures and have had the good fortune to work, study and travel all over the world. I have been fortunate to work both as an administrator and as a classroom educator in higher education; my areas of interest are international, adult and comparative education.  I enjoy assisting engineering students seize global opportunities!
