Pitt in Cyprus

You owe it to yourself to take advantage of this time in your life and study abroad! And not just anywhere! Cyprus! This trip will lay foundations for future, repeat trips to Cyprus, as many of our alumni do! The ease, convenience, safety and affordability of this program make this an attractive option. Our partners at Neapolis University - Paphos host us on their campus which has its own pool, gym with trainers, cafeteria and on-site security close to everything, including the municipal beach right across the street and the tourist district and harbor! All amenities are easily accessible and affordable!

Pitt in Cyprus is designed to have you learn and explore with comfort and ease. The program's many excursions take you throughout the country — to Nicosia, the capital city, where the UN Green Line separates the occupied northern Cyprus from the free, democratic south; to Limassol, the modern port city which is the base of operations for many shipping and offshore energy companies and historic Kourion and the castle of Kolossi; to Paphos with its beautiful Akamas peninsula, Latsi and Blue Lagoon, Aphrodite’s Rock and St. Paul’s Pillar; to Ayia Napa, the Mecca of Cypriot tourism. The program also boasts interactions with key players in Cypriot politics, economics and tourism. The learning experience is holistic and an opportunity for you to make an impact yourself!

What You'll Accomplish:
As an engaged and active participant in this program, you will have the opportunity to:
  • Study the contemporary political economy issues in the eastern Mediterranean
  • Examine how various ethnic groups have shaped modern Cyprus
  • Develop a deeper understanding of social class and class analysis

If Greece is the crossroads of the continents of Europe, Asia and Africa, Cyprus is the intersection! The geographic location of Cyprus and the fact that it is an island-nation has made it an oasis of respite for many in a part of the world that has been historically riddled with conflicts. Cyprus is a beautiful country with the Troodos Mountains literally jutting to the sky with elevations that allow skiing for many months of the year to the clear blue and azure waters of the country’s famous coastlines, highlighted by Ayia Napa and Paphos. The seas of Cyprus are also rich in natural resources — like oil and natural gas — so that has made it an object of desire by transnational corporations and countries from around the world. This is revealed in the diverse range of people you see there traveling, investing, and working. Cyprus is a gem that you will discover for yourself!

The program is based in Pafos, a popular and fast developing tourist resort and home to an attractive fishing harbor.

Peace Movements (PS1303)

This course will utilize multi-disciplinary theories, methods and perspectives as we consider the historic conflicts in the Aegean region.  The Twentieth century conflicts in the Dodecanese Islands, the Cyprus Issue, the European Union candidacies of Greece, Turkey and Cyprus, and today’s hot conflicts over resources – like offshore drilling rights, continental shelf issues, and natural gas issues will take center stage.  We will identify the roots of the conflicts, the contested narratives from the respective communities, social movements who both fueled conflict and fought for peace in these Aegean (and in some cases, Balkan) countries.  In this respect, we will utilize historical, political, economic, social movement, and cultural sociological theories and methods.  Most noteworthy will be the introduction of Conflict Resolution theories and methods.

Peace Movements (SOC1360)

Syllabus:
Wealth and Power (SOC0432)

The objective of this course is to introduce students to the concept of social stratification.  This includes an understanding of social class and class analysis.  These concepts are typically alien to Amercians, who oftentimes cite what is called "US exceptionalism," and emphasize individualism at the expense of collective conceptualizations.  This course is designed in the tradition of Political Economy and explores the major social science paradigms for analyzing relations among state, economy, and society. Through readings, lectures and discussion of original texts in political liberalism and individualism, neo-classical economics, Marxism, sociological and cultural theories, the seminar examines the fundamental assumptions on which our understanding of the social world and our research are based. In this unique version of the course, students will view class through the eyes of others, namely the people of the Aegean: Greeks, Turks, and Cypriots.  Beyond that, we will go much deeper to analyze class interests at the regional, international, and global levels.  By doing such an analysis, students will be able to identify cross-country interests of both workers and capitalists, and everyone else in between.
