Advice from a Program Alum

If you are thinking about studying on the Pitt Plus3 United Kingdom program, DO IT! You will make lifelong memories with your new friends while expanding your knowledge. I am going to share with you some advice about packing for the trip, getting the most out of your studies, and how to enjoy yourself while staying safe.

To begin with, pack as light as you can. Believe me, I know how hard it is to resist bringing five pairs of shoes and twenty different outfits. This trip is only two weeks long so be sure to pack good walking sneakers (you will do a lot of sightseeing), a pair of comfortable professional shoes, some rain boots (English weather is unpredictable), and sandals. Anything extra beside these shoes will take up space you might need for clothing. Speaking of clothing, try to stick to a neutral wardrobe. You will need some business casual clothing for classes so I would suggest one black and one brown pair of pants. For tops: blouses, button ups, and sweaters are all great! For the times when you aren’t in class, you will be exploring or going out to dinner or the pubs with friends. I would suggest bringing comfortable jeans or leggings for these days because you will be moving around a lot. Lastly, leave some space in your suitcase or bring an extra bag for all the souvenirs you will accumulate in the country! I certainly struggled with adding all of my extra trinkets in my suitcase. Below are some outfit inspirations.
In order to get the most out of your global experience, be present! And by that I mean physically show up to classes and excursions as well as being mentally present by actively engaging in conversation and paying attention to those teaching you about their culture. I remember on the trip there was a meet and greet activity with English students. This was the best experience of the trip because I was able to ask questions that I didn’t get the chance to ask in class. I remember we were so fascinated by each other’s difference and similarities when it came to favorite TV shows, music, slang, politics, etc. If you get a chance to talk with students from the UK, be prepared for an amazing eye-opening conversation!

While the goal for the trip is to expand your global perspective and gain a deeper understanding of disparities across countries and populations, you still need to enjoy yourself. When you have free time, first check yourself and your social battery. It can be draining to go from classes to even more activities. If you need a nap, take a nap. If you are ready to go out, go out. Everyone has their own limits and that’s perfectly ok! If you do end up going out to dinner or a pub with friends, you need to make sure you are staying safe. You are in an unfamiliar place and tourists are prone to being targeted. When walking around, be sure you are with a group of people you trust. If you are going to a pub and drinking, know your limits and stop before you reach a dangerous level. If you use your best judgement and maintain respect towards your friends and others, you will be just alright!
