The Haller Global Honors Fellowship: Ireland program is exclusive to Pitt Business students who have been admitted to the Frederick Honors College.
This international honors experience, exclusive for Pitt Business honors students accepted into the Haller Global Fellows program, allows you to jumpstart your academic career at Pitt Business and be part of an international business consulting team -- all prior to your first semester on campus!
The first portion of the program will bring students to the University of Pittsburgh for 2.5 weeks. While at Pitt, you will become accustomed to life at the University, taking your first core business course, and making connections with fellow Pitt Business honors students. You'll also get a taste of the landscape of Pittsburgh through business site visits, cultural activities, and neighborhood tours.
The second portion of the program will take you to Ireland and Northern Ireland for 1.5 weeks. You and the rest of your student team will gain first-hand experience through consulting work for a small business in County Donegal, Ireland, engaging with leaders in the political and business sectors to help them meet unique local economic challenges. Along the way, you'll engage with the powerful modern history of the island in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and explore extraordinary landscapes through visits to landmarks such as the Giant's Causeway. Program features include:
- Visit multiple locations including Belfast and Derry in Northern Ireland, and County Donegal in Ireland
- Company site visits and guest lectures from business content experts and business leaders
- A full cultural program on The Troubles in Northern Ireland, including tours of the murals, youth centre service learning, and a special hosting by the Lord Mayor of Belfast
- Outdoor activities at the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, Grianan of Alieac, Ards Forest, Glenveagh National Park, the beaches of Donegal, and more!
The best part? All accepted students will receive an automatic $4,000 scholarship, payable exclusively towards the total cost of the Haller Global Honors Fellowship program.

Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland, has a rich history as a busy port, linen manufacturing center, and more recently as a shipbuilding hub -- notably, the location for the construction and launch of the Titanic. The city's central Cathedral Quarter has been dramatically revitalized in recent decades, driven by the expansion of the fintech, film production, tourism, and a large resident student population at Queen's University Belfast. You'll have the opportunity to enjoy Belfast's unique mix of architecture, as well as some incredible local dining, markets, and shops.
Cities such as Belfast and Derry -- the second largest city in the North -- have proved culturally and economically resilient as they emerged from The Troubles, a long period of civil conflict between Catholic nationalists and Protestant unionists in the 20th century. As the result of being in the front seats of sectarian conflict, Belfast and Derry are key sites for a powerful reconciliation process among Irish Catholic and Protestant neighborhoods, especially among their youth. You'll visit landmarks of this history, guided by local nonprofit leaders who are closely involved in this important work.
Although they are separated by a national border, Northern Ireland enjoys a strong cultural relationship with County Donegal, Ireland. Predominantly rural, Donegal is a patchwork of small villages, dramatic landscapes, and seemingly endless coastline. Because of its remoteness, it comprises the second-largest Irish-speaking area (officially called Gaeltachttai) in the country. It has a deep heritage that reflected in its Iron Age monuments, weaving, and traditional music that you'll hear nightly within its remaining historic pubs. Donegal's landscapes are a unique asset that drive its contemporary economy; in fact, the county was recently dubbed one of the top regions for travel in the world.
Despite the county's natural richness, the annual ebb and flow of tourists, predominantly from Northern Ireland, have challenged local business owners who have to survive the off-seasons. Nonprofits, entrepreneurs, and public officials are working to stabilize the economy and stave off the migration of its young people out of the county.

Dr. Philip Hnatkovich
Hi I'm Phil Hnatkovich and I'm a Global Experiences Manager in the College of Business Administration. I've worked in higher education for nearly two decades, both as a lecturer and as a study abroad manager. I came to the field of international education after years of international study, beginning with language and cultural studies in Acadie, then historical research in French, Cornish, and English port communities and pirate havens, and finally as a co-founder of an international digital educational program aimed at transcribing historical documents from the 17th century. I'm thrilled to help students find their own paths from travel to professional opportunity!
